Uniform Policy

At Greater Trinity Academy, we believe that a student’s appearance has an impact on his/her attitudes and behaviors. Respect for the school community, the education process, and the students themselves are, to a degree, shown by the student’s attire. The uniform policy also helps maintain a sense of modesty and equality while educating students about what is appropriate dress for the time and place.

Aims and Objectives:

  • It is our school policy that all children wear a school uniform when attending school.

  • Our policy on school uniforms is based on the notion that the school uniform:

    • promotes a sense of pride in the school and creates a sense of community/ belonging towards the school;

    • is practical and smart;

    • identifies the children with the school;

    • prevents children from coming to school in fashion clothes that could be distracting in class

    • makes children feel equal to their peers in terms of appearance;

    • is designed with health and safety in mind.

Uniform Upkeep:

As part of our respect for the school and its image, students are required to wear well-maintained uniforms. Uniform colors are burgundy and navy. Should an article of uniform clothing become tattered, torn, discolored, ill fitting, etc., the student/family is required to mend or replace the article.

Accountability:

The Uniform Policy reflects the entire Greater Trinity Academy community and thus it will be the responsibility of the student, the parents, the teachers, and the administration to uphold.

  • It is the student's responsibility to choose the appropriate clothing to wear to school.

  • It is the parent's responsibility to scrutinize the uniform before the student leaves for school.

  • It is the teacher's responsibility to monitor and enforce the Uniform Policy during the day.

  • It is the administration's responsibility to monitor and enforce the Uniform Policy.

Uniform Sizing and Cleaning Information:

  • All clothing must be appropriately sized.

    • No bare midriffs are allowed.

    • Skirts and shorts may be no shorter than 2 inches above the knee, depending on an individual‘s height.

  • When sizing clothes, items may appear to be “big” for a given size. This is to allow for shrinkage. If an item is a little big, do not go down in size.

  • Uniforms contain cotton. While uniform fabric is pre-shrunk, shirts can shrink up to an additional 8% and the bottoms can shrink up to an additional 3%. This is consistent with US industry acceptable standard shrinkage rates.

  • Uniform items are to be washed in COLD water and dried with LOW heat.

  • Hang dry is preferable.

  • If high heat is used, you could experience more shrinkage than normal.

Uniform Tops:

  • All tops (polo shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts) must be approved uniform wear.

  • All visible undershirts must be plain white.

  • To ensure uniform conformity if/when an outer top (for example: a uniform sweater, sweatshirt or long-sleeved top) is removed, another uniform shirt must be worn as a replacement.

  • For Cold Weather Wear during school hours, zip-up sweatshirts and cardigans.

Shoes:

  • Rain Boots are not allowed inside the classrooms. Children may wear them to school but should have an appropriate pair of shoes to change into for classroom wear.

  • Not allowed: rubber flip-flops, mules, slip-ons, thongs and clogs.

  • For girls, only a flat or low heel shoe (not to exceed 2 inches in height) is considered acceptable uniform wear.

For outdoors activities only, jackets/other cold weather outerwear are students’ choice.

Information Specific to Elementary School Students (Preschool to Grade 5)

If the outside temperature is below 5C (40F), children need a heavier coat in order to play outside. Hats and gloves/mittens may also be appropriate. Children who are not dressed warmly enough in cold weather will wait in the office area during lunch recess times.

Accessories:

  • Accessories must subtly complement the uniform. Large chains, large necklaces, red bandanas or bows, scarves, etc., are not permitted.

  • Socks are students’ choice but must match the uniform. All styles including knee socks and tights, if worn, must be a solid color of white, navy blue, or black without a pattern.

  • Leggings are acceptable in solid navy blue or solid white (no patterns or trim).
